I am currently one of three managers on a team with around fifteen developers responsible for the Content Management System at The New York Times. The application, called "Scoop", is used by the newsroom to edit the content that goes out to the website, the mobile apps, and all the other consumers of NYT content. Content Management is a hot topic lately and we wrote about our application on the NYT Open blog (see link.)
The focus of my efforts lately have been on our article interface where we have a Backbone application that heavily leverages WebSockets to facilitate the collaboration between reporters, editors, and producers all working in the same article at the same time. Unlike a WordPress or Medium that are designed around a single author, the NYT has many different types of users each responsible for their own piece of the editing process and a sophisticated workflow to make sure all facts are checked, all writing is focused and clear, and all photos, graphics, videos, and interactive media are top notch. It has been a fantastic experience to work with the newsroom and serve the needs of such a brilliant and passionate group of people.
