Brendan Smith is a Senior Principal Software Systems Engineer and Department Leader of the Applied Software Engineering group at The MITRE Corporation. The Applied Software Engineering department is one of eight departments in the Software Engineering Technical Center charged with developing software and systems engineering solutions for various customers. As part of the COVID-19 Healthcare Coalition, Brendan became the lead of the Telehealth Working Group.

Since joining MITRE, Brendan has utilized his software engineering skills in support of several programs and held various roles and responsibilities. In 2012, Brendan began supporting healthcare initiatives for multiple Federal sponsors, and led some MITRE internal research and development activities in virtual care. Brendan has a strong passion in telemedicine and virtual health technologies, especially looking at how healthcare organizations can best implement telehealth as part of the standard set of healthcare services.

Telehealth and Medicine Today (TMT) is a leading international peer review journal that examines the value of telehealth and clinical automation from medical, technical, policy, economic and strategic perspectives. Multidisciplinary stakeholders converge to address medical, technical, business and societal aspects of this growing health technology sector. The journal assists building knowledge and consensus to appropriately deploy and scale delivery safe and secure services to achieve sustainable outcomes for affordable, accessible, and quality care for health consumers around the globe, implementing pragmatic approaches to issues such as interoperability, quality and safety of evolving technologies, business processes, and economic systems driving remote care in a value based system.

Developed US Army Maneuver Command System (MCS) software, including the maps and overlays functionality. Also developed test plans and procedures for the Joint Army-Navy Mobile Robot (MDARS), and supported the operational assessment of the robotic platform in San Diego, CA.

Developed GPS IIR proposal. Project lead for GPS IIR flight software simulation testbed. Developed INMARSAT flight software, including thruster control modules.

Developed functional test software for Navy Trident II D5 missile guidance system.
