Turning cloud consumption into cash flow!

As a member of the Operations CTO’s management team, delivered major strategic technology transformation pivoting away from a US-centric mainframe based model to an in-region hybrid on-prem / AWS one, while continuing to drive excellence in running existing critical functions. This involved partnering with peer groups in Architecture, Networking, and Application Development over roadmap and functional alignment, while managing large platform teams (~200 FTEs) to execute delivery.

• Provided modernized foundational infrastructure (compute & storage, AI runtimes, cloud & container platforms) entirely decoupled from the US, meeting predicted regulatory changes coming in 2025. First location live was South Africa.

• Performed deep dives to uncover process problems on existing infrastructure, spanning tens of thousands of servers and hundreds of thousands of containers. This revealed 8 figures USD of year-on-year efficiency savings, and cut cycle times.

Built teams that provided both software and hosting of a service based data platform across all functional areas, offering consistent experience for clients ranging from Quants to Operations. This simple path for exposing data enabled a transformation in how information was shared and leveraged across teams and disciplines. Data pipelines to ingest, transform, analyze, and serve up time series milestoned data sets were then built on this framework to drive adoption.

• Delivered a multi-language (Java, Python, C#/Excel) business agnostic platform with cataloged APIs and feeds (gRPC, Parquet). Teams could publish new data sets within hours, enabling business to rapidly iterate.

• Runtime was elastic (k8s hosted on & off prem) with code in a monorepo, reducing fixed costs and integrated with vendor tools and open source (e.g. Jupyter, BeakerX, DataDog).

Goldman Sachs builds and maintains its own securities clearance and settlement platforms. These global systems are designed for scalable capacity, nimble deployment, and automated testability. We aim for high levels of resiliency while delivering operational and business efficiencies.

• Re-engineered middle office flows with a new microservice architecture to replace existing legacy applications with goals of at least doubling team productivity to deliver new business demands. Key to success was ensuring loose coupling of systems combined with automated testing and deployment.

• Management of global securities settlements engineering teams and applications across 3 regions requiring 24x5 availability. Staffing was a blend of employees and contractors across 4 time zones that provided clients access to ~100 markets, processing over $700B daily via ~10M transactions. This function interacts with the entire post-execution trade life cycle.
