As a rescue volunteer, I respond to reports of animals of concern. Sometimes, I am the first one on the scene to assess the animal's condition, assess the safety of the rescue crew, and engage with the public. While rescuing, we ensure the animal is safely transported to the Marine Mammal Hospital for medical attention.
The Marine Mammal Center is the world’s largest marine mammal hospital and rescues more marine mammals than any other organization in the world. The center advances global ocean conservation through rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research, and education. Since 1975, more than 24,000 marine mammals have been rescued, covering a range that spans 600 miles of California coastline and the Big Island of Hawai‘i.
