This research project is intended to develop a non- linear finite element analysis procedure to predict the seal reaction forces when the hood is in latched condition. Seal component is modeled as hyperelastic material. Uniaxial compression test is performed on the seal using Instron machine to gather stress strain data for seal material. Obtained stress strain data is imported into Abaqus CAE to evaluate the strain energy density function. Appropriate elements types, weld connections, contact definitions and hinge connectors are employed in generating the FE model. Enforced rotation is given at the hinge connector to simulate the door latched condition. Reaction forces exerted by the seal and the deflection plots are reported which are consistent with the test results. The process developed is used to study and compare the seal reaction forces for different seal material properties
